Developing criteria for your next home
Determining your wants and needs
The best way to do this is to write down what you must have, what you would like, and finally what you definitely would work for you. If there is a co-owner have that person make a list but don’t show your partner your list just yet.
Aspects of a new home that you must have
- Is there a specific, area, neighborhood or school district?
- How many bedrooms are required?
- Do you require a garage and if so what type
- Is a developed basement a necessity?
- Are you looking for a home with a view or special location?
- Is there a particular style of home that fits you life style now?
- Look at your present living conditions to determine what will be a must have in your next home.
Features that you would like in your next home
- Possibly an en-suite bath.
- Landscaping features like privacy, decking, fencing.
- Walk-in closets, Main floor laundry.
- Fireplace, Jetted tubs, Steam showers
- Look at your present living conditions to determine what you would like in your next home.
Aspects of a new home that would not work for you
- A home located on a busy street or noisy location.
- Certain styles of homes.
- Homes that require upgrading.
- Corner lots or North back yards
- Look at your present living conditions to determine what you would not want in your next home.
Review your list. If your co-owner made a list, compare them to see if your priorities match. If they don't, you'll need to compromise, revising your lists so that both of you are happy.
It is time to review your thoughts. Compare what you and your partner responses were and see the items that are similar and what needs to be discussed further. Having a list of wants and needs will enable you to set up criteria to begin your search. As you begin to view homes you will soon find that compromises are required and your needs will evolve as the process goes forward.
Now you're ready for Step 2
